Answer Engine Optimization

Get cited[1] by AI — before your competitors do.

When people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI for the best answer, only a handful of sites get named. Getting cited comes down to three things: letting AI crawlers in, server-rendered structured data, and one clean quotable answer per page. This free checklist shows you exactly how.
  • The exact crawler + schema setup that makes AI read and quote your site
  • The one 40–60 word line AI lifts into answers (and where to put it)
  • How to prove you're being cited — most people never check
  • What to skip — the hyped tactic that does nothing

Written by Frode Friestad, founder of iamcited — whose sites get cited by ChatGPT, Grok & Perplexity. Field notes, not theory.

The receipts

Not theory: my Norwegian news site droneavisa.no earned citations across five AI engines within weeks of launch — same playbook as the checklist. Measured with Ahrefs, June 2026.

Quick check: can AI cite you?

Six yes/no questions. Be honest — the AI engines will be.

[Q1]Are AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) explicitly allowed in your robots.txt?

[Q2]Is your content readable without JavaScript (server-rendered)?

[Q3]Do you have Organization + FAQ schema in your raw HTML?

[Q4]Does each key page have one 40–60 word answer that works quoted out of context?

[Q5]Is there a named human author with a real about page?

[Q6]Have you ever actually checked whether AI engines cite you?

Notes & references

[01]

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

AEO is structuring your site so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot — can read and cite it when answering user questions. The main levers: crawlability, server-rendered structured data, and one clean quotable answer per page.

[02]

How do I get my website cited by ChatGPT?

Let AI crawlers in via robots.txt (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User), server-render your content and JSON-LD so non-JS bots can read it, add FAQ and Organization schema, and write one tight 40–60 word factual answer per page that makes sense quoted out of context.

Does llms.txt help with AI citations?

Little evidence so far. No major answer engine has confirmed they read it, and real tests show no measurable lift. The reliable levers are structured data and crawlability — not llms.txt.
